Industrial Position Of Harbour Pilot Is Outlined
WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA). —The precise position, industrially, or a pilot appointed by a harbour board is the subject of a lengthy reserved judgment of the Court of Arbitration, delivered by Mr. Justice Tyndall today. At Conciliation Council proceedings in the dispute between the Merchant Service Guild and the harbour boards the point was raised by the employers that pilots were in a class apart, that there was no relationship of master and servant between them and the boards, and that consequently they were not. workers within the meaning of the Act. The point was referred to the Court where it was argued by Dr. O. C. Mazengarb for the guild and Mr. J. F. B. Stevenson for the boards. Decision is that the Conciliation Council has jurisdiction to hear the dispute in so far as it relates to pilots appointed by harbour boards pursuant to Sections 47 and 205 of the Harbours Act, 1923.
