FEWER STUDENTS FOR TRAINING COLLEGES FROM DISTRICT SOUGHT
The Wanganui Education Board lias been notified that its quota of students for the Teachers’ Training College next year will be 81. This is a slight decrease on the number for last year. A circular letter from the actingDirector of Education, Mr. A. F. McMurtrie, a former senior inspector at Wanganui, intimates to education boards that 2418 students, comprising 1025 first-year, 1215 second-year, 4< third-year, 70 university students ana 36 homecraft will be under training at training colleges next year. Education boards have been requested to have selections for the 1950 training year completed by the end or the second school term. The reason for this is said to be to enable students to make their plans well in advance and to permit education boards and the Education Department to review the position in good time should further consideration be necessary. Forty-seven students are to be retained for a third year of specialisation in the fields of speech work (10), physical education (12) and nature study (5).
The normal closing date for applications for admission to the training colleges is September 1, but this year it is July L
