Increase In Births In France

LONDON. May 31 (Recd. 6pm).— Paris messages state that the French population statistics for 1948 show a surplus of 358,000 of births over deaths ■ —the largest, increase recorded since vital statistics have been kept in [France. The next largest increase was in 1947, when the surplus was 330,000. The total natural increase in the French population in three completely recorded years since the end of the war has been 92 000 as compared with only 74.000 during the ten years between 1921 and 1930, and an actual excess of 125000 deaths over births between 1931 and 1940. It was only because of immigration that the population of France was maintained and showed a slight increase between the two world wars.
