Silk And Homabrook Provided Top Line Golf

Highlight of the inter-provincial golf match between the West Coast : and Wellington on the Hokowhitu ■ links at Palmerston North during the week-end was the match between B. M. Silk (Wanganui) and J. P. Hornabrook (Wellington), both former national amateur champions and members of the team which visited Australia last year. Both will be competitors at the North Island championships at Wanganui next weekend. The Hornabrook-Silk game was followed by a big gallery and Hornabrook 3-putted on the first green and on the fourth green. He 2 down at the turn after winning the fifth with a birdie and the eighth, where Silk was weak with his chip. Silk won the sixth and the ninth and was out in 36. The position was unchanged at the 18th. Both were playing good golf and Silk’s round would be about a 75. Silk missed a foot putt at the 11th. There was a titanic struggle in the afternoon and Hornabrook won the last hole to square the game. The gallery was very large and Silk won the first two holes to increase his lead to four. He 3-putted on the third and lost that one. He won the next but 3-putted on the fifth. Hornabrook, who was playing great golf, won the eighth and ninth and Silk was only one up as they turned for home. The cards out read: — Silk: 435365 5 4 3—38. Hornabrook: 64445553 2 —38. Silk just missed threes at the 10th and 11th and he won the 12th and was two up. The position was unchanged after the 15th but Silk was hunkered and lost the next. The 17th was halved and Hornabrook had the honour of driving from the 18th tee. Playing first at the green. Silk pitch- < ed one pin high to the left. The ball} landed on firm ground and took a I lively bounce to finish in a bunker. | Hornabrook’s second was on to the ; right. Silk exploded just over four feet from the hole but he .failed with the putt for the half and Hornabrook had pulled the match out of the fire. Their cards in read: — Silk: 44354454 5—38. Hornabrook: 44454444 4—37. KITTO AND HORNE A. R. Kitto (Wanganui) was three up on Horne (Wellington) after 18 holes and the quality of his golf is indicated by his 36 out including a seven. Horne held him for the inward half after being 3 down at the turn. Kitto would be round in about 75 and Horne in 78. Horne was in the trees from the tee at the 18th but he was on in three and just missed getting the four. However, it would i not have saved the hole for Kitto was down in three. Kitto was getting great length from the tees and his drive at the 15th was an exceptionally long one. In the afternoon Kitto played even better golf than before lunch and he was two under par despite stymies when the game ended four and three in his favour. PAGE AND CASEY

E. Page (Manor Park) and T. Casey (Wanganui) were square at lunch after some fine golf marked by patches of indifferent golf and some patches which were very good. Their cards would be on the 75 mark. Page got a two at the ninth and Casey a three at the 18th, and one hole by Page will be remembered. It was the 17th where Page’s second finished “suckered” in a bunker. He exploded out and sank the 15-footer for the par four. When the game was resumed Casey played scintillating golf. He reached the turn in 35 and with Page off the line with his tee shots won seven and five. Page was hitting his seconds and short approaches well but he could not match his opponent's game.
