U.S. And Britain Will Trade With Communists In Areas Of China
NEW YORK, May 29 (Recd 1 am>. —American and British business men are doing business in the Tientsin area and would do business in other Communist held territory of China, said Mr. Roger Lapham, chief of the United States E.C.A. mission to China.
Mr. Lapham arrived at San Francisco from Hongkong en route to Washington to report to the E.C.A. administrator, Mr. Paul Hoffman. Mr. Lapham said he did not know the future of the E.C.A. in China but it still had 54000000 dollars to spend on April 3 and possibly more, because shipments of cotton and food were diverted from Shanghai. He added that Communist troops were behaving excellently in occupied areas. The Nationalists were not prepared to defend Canton and many officials already were preparing to evacuate, presumably to Formosa, which it is rumoured will be the next headquarters of the Nationalists, and already contains many Nationalist troops from Shanghai.
