Kaierau's Narrow Win Against Marist
In a game that did not produce many highlights Kaierau beat Marist by 5 points to nil in the main game on the park. The winners points came from a converted try in the first half. Favoured with a wind which grew more robust as the game progressed, Kaierau should have had a larger total in the first spell. It says much for the maroons’ defence that when the wind favoured Marist in the final session of play, they were able to prevent the greens from scoring. Marist lacked team tactics and tailed to exploit the high kick when they had the wind at their backs. Tneir backs lacked penetration, and inability to finish off movements robbed them of points. The side is also in need of a goal kicker. In the closing stages of the game Kaierau lost Coiin Lynch, their star back. He was carried off on a stretcher but .it was later ascertained he was suffering tiom acute cramp. The teams were:— Kaierau: W. Dawson, K. Duncan, J. Price, B Bason, C. Lynch, G. Luoni, J. James, J. McKnight, L. Hill, E. V. Bell.s, R. Ward, G. Gcrrie, J. McCcnarchv, R- Crombie, F. Wanahi. Marist: N. Wallace, R. MicPhun, L. Lamont, B. Corliss, D. Asher, P. Barron, J. Olliver, N. Crowley, J. Heagney, M. Pettis, B. O’Leary, M. Daley, F. Huwyler, L. Managn, N. Lash. Referee: Mr. N. Neilson.
With a freshening wind at then backs Kaierau had Marist penned to their side of hall-way practically all the first half, tn the Kaierau ranks C. Lynch was showing out with gooo all-round play, but at times he tnrew possession away with ill-uirecteo passes, which nullified much of his efforts. N. Wallace, the Marist runback was working overtime on defence and often caught the eye with faultless handling in the race of on coming forwards.
From a scrum in Marist territory the Kaierau lorwards heeled the ban smartly and the bail was given wide to Bellis who raced hard and straight. When challenged he passed to Luoni who had ranged himset in support and racing haru for the line, scored. Luoni also converted his try. Kaierau 5, Marist 0. Marist so tar had done well to hold Kaierau to a 5 point leau in the first half and it looked when the teams changed at half-time that Marist would prove troublesome as
the wind had increased in strength. In the ranks of Kaierau there nan been some changes in position. Price had moved out to Bason s wing as the latter did not resume. Lynen went into centre, N. Thomas taking his position in the five-eighth line. Dawson, tne Kaierau lun-oack markeo gallantly when tne Marist forwards came surging at the goal, and saveu a sure try. three times Marist made solid, but unsuccesstul attempts to cross Kaierau’s line, but their best was not good enougu. Lynch, Kaierau, was injured and had to be taken from the field on the ambulance stretcher. S. Hunt filled the vacancy in the backs. The game ended with Kaierau having tneir line intact and the score favouring them 5-0.
