WANGANUI BASKETBALL
Past Students And St. Mary’s Gain Wins Two matches were played in the Wanganui Basketball Association’s senior competition on Saturday. Past Students defeated Nga Toa narrowly by 20 points to 19. St. Mary’s beat X.T.C. 16 to 12. Technical Old Girls had the bye. The respective teams were:— Past Students: I. Platt, B. Spicer, V. Jackson, S. Worrall, O. Platt, M. Price, L. Ernst, Y. Alabaster, B. Whiting (captain). Nga Toa: E. Bosher, D. Tonga, M. Howe, D. Bosher, P. Hughes, R. Sunderland, P. Cummins, M. Wright, J. Smith (captain). St. Marys: U. Jeffrey, N. O’Leary, K. O'Leary, M. McCashin, J. Taylor, G. Mashlin, J. Manson, N. O’Connor, J. McCashin (captain).
X.T.C.: L. Cuthbertson, L. Couchman, B. Anderson, B. McLean, P. Montague, H. Chapman, J. Phillips, J. Brown, V. Robertson (captain). Students and Nga Toa started their game briskly Mnd kept up a fast pace throughout. Students attained an early lead and kept a safe margin
'.head for the first quarter. The latter part of the first spell saw Nga Tua attacking strongly to draw level at 9all at half time. In the second spell Nga Toa held the lead most of the while, but superior shooting by Students, and B. Whiting in particular, brought them the victory.
Nga Toa’s shooting was not reliable, though D. Tonga made few mistakes in the shots she took. Strong defence play by I. Platt kept the Nga Toa goalies well out in the circle. V. Jackson, also of Students, defence is showing greatly improved form this season and was responsible for some smart clear aways. Students’ centre third combined well, F. Worrall being particularly speedy. For Nga Toa M. Howe played a much more open game than usual, despite strong opposition. Nga Toa had more attempts at goal than Students in the second spell and with steadier shooting should have taken the game. Their defence combined well and made some excellent saves within the circle. The game between X.T.C. and St. Mary’s saw the latter team in the lead most of the time. X.T.C. were not at their best and at times appeared unsure of their combination, no doubt due to the constant changes in the personnel of the side. Individual play--rs impressed with their possibilities, the outstanding players In each third being N. Cuthbertson, whose goal throwing maintained a steady accuracy, V. Robertson, who handled well in the centre third, and P. Montague, who showed flashes of brilliance in defence. St.Mary’s played a concerted team game. Their combination has vastly improved. All players showed considerable unselfishness in passing movements. J. McCashin played her best game of the season, with keen interception and well directed passes. KING’S DAY TOURNEY.
