SHANGHAI. May 22 (Recd. 12.34 pm)—The vital Nationalist bastion of Woosung, guarding the gateway to Shanghai, alow. today stood between the Communists and their plan to encircle the city’s 300,000 defenders.

Following Communist penetration into the Pootung bulge at Mout, the Whangpoo River, famous muddy tidai shipping artery of the world’s fourth largest pity, is now definitely closed. But the last Nalionalistjemergency escape route remains open along a short stretch of the Yangtze River to the coast north of Woosung.
