Wanganui Harbour

Sir, —One cannot help but notice and perforce comment on the contrast between the reports of the Power Board and the Harbour Board contained in Tuesday’s edition. The former, a tidy, orderly frank statement which reflects the greatest possible credit on its presenters both lor its lucidity and the evidence of an able management. In the latter case however, we find, and not unexpectedly, since it has been the burden of the more recent reports, a tale ol dispiriting hush-hush and all the evidence that things are not as they should be. Even so, I would not be offering comment were it not for the rather cavalier treatment meted out to a letter sent by the Electors’ Association. Admittedly, the association has no legal right to a reply and the Harbour Board is quite entitled to refuse so to do; but one would think that the most sensible course would be tu give a full and satisfactory answer, always providing that such an answer could be given. As Mr. Rogers said ”11 the letter contains such obvious errors of fact then it is essential that the board answer it.” Mr. Morrison asks rather plaintively whether the people could not trust their representatives to do their work conscientiously. But it must not be assumed that work done conscientiously is aways done intelligently, and it is now obvious that there are many in this town who doubt the capabilities of some of the present board to deal adequately with what appears to be a rapidly de-

teriorating situation. May 1 therefore enter an earnest plea that the fullest publicity be ac corded the letters from the electors Association and any correspondence that may ensue.—l am, etc., “J.F.C.”
