HEAVY RAIN IN GISBORNE DISTRICT

GISBORNE, Last Night (PA).— Coming on top of 13 sucessive wet days, heavy rain drenched the Gisborne district throughout the past 24 hours, and the East Coast highway is blocked at the top end of the fastrising Oweka Stream. Since April 17 the district ‘had only one fine day, although the rain has not been heavy till.the past two days. Reports received by the Catchment Board concerning the effect of rain on the Waipoa River did not indicate any appreciable rise in the level, thougn the continuation of the preset fall throughout the night and the possible deterioration of the weather is indicated by the Meteorological Office, might increase the fall to over 2 inches lor 24 hours. Bad' weather and poor visibility interrupted air services to and from Gisborne. The afternoon plane from Wellington to Gisborne was he’d up at Napier through a radio defect, and after aking off for Gisborne was signalled to return as conditions at Gisborne had deteriorated and the field closed down for the day. The dire-1 plane from Well ngton to Gisborne called at Pa’-merston and Napier. - nd because of conditions did not reach Gisborne till aft n r 5 o'clock, over an hour late, and did not proceed to Auckland. The plane which stayed overnight at Nanier will leave for Gisborne at 6.45 a.m., and the plane remaining at Gisborne overnight will leave for Auckland at 6.45 a.m.
