BOWLING SEASON CLOSED The Taihape Bowling Club's 194849 season was brought to a successful close during the week-end, when visitors were present from Ruapehu for the occasion. Various competitions were played, members entering into the spirit of the games with marked enthusiasm. C. Murphy distinguished himself by winning three events. Competition winners were as follows: Drawing to kitty, H. D. Bond; drawing to circle, C. Murphy; yard on, C. Murphy; drive, C. Murphy. The full rink competition in the morning was won by J. Bridson's team, while a similar event in the afternoon resulted in a tie between D. Morris’ team (Taihape) and L. Taylor's team (Ruapehu). During the course of a speech, Mr. D. Morris, president of the Taihape Bowling Club, thanked members for their attendance and extended a special welcome to visitors. He thanked the committee for their loyal support during the season and also made pecial mention of the efforts of the ladies of the Croquet Club in providing afternoon tea. The greenkeeper, Mr. F. Kreegher, was also thanked for his work during the past year. Mr. Morris referred to the success of A. Caulcutt who had “scooped the pool’’ in the club championships, having won the singles, pairs (with A. P. Seceombe) and the full rink (with Buckley, Young and Cardno). “This was a particularly meritorious performance,” added the president, who also congratulated the ether winners on their achievements. HOCKEY NOTES. At a recent meeting of the Tatliape Hockey Sub-Association it was decided Io revive the Joblin and Quirk competitions, which in years gone by constituted the chief competitive event of the year and attracted entries from far afield. The Joblin Cup was presented by the late Mr. A. J. Joblin for a ladies’ tourney to be played at Taihape annually, while the Quirk Cup was donated by the late Mr. John Quirk for a men’s tournament to be played in conjunction with the Joblin Cup fixture for ladies. Both these events drew players from all parts of the North Island and the occasion was regarded as the “big day’’ of the hockey year. The hockey season will open in Taihape on May 8 with club competitions. PERSONAL. Rev. Mr. Arnold, vicar of Mangaweka, celebrated Holy Communion at St. Margaret’s Anglican Church at Taihape on Sunday, the service being fully choral. Rev. J. R. Neild, vicar of Taihape, preached at the morning service at Ohakune on the same day.

Mr. L. Jensen, who was admitted to the Taihape Hospital on Saturday following injuries received in a football match, was discharged on Sunday. An X-ray examination of his nose is likely, to ascertain if a bone has been broken.

Mr. Roy Sinclair, who suffered a lacerated car during a Rugby match on Saturday, also entered hospital for the insertion of five stitches, but he remained at the institution for only a short time. Peter Ireland, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Ireland, of Taihape, who was injured in a recent shooting accident, is now making good progress towards recovery at the Taihape Hospital. Mr. M. Nicol, manager of the Majestic cinema, who has been on a five weeks’ vacation to Australia, accompanied by Mrs. Nicol, returned to Taihape on Monday morning. During his absence Mr. B. Robertson acted as manager. Mr. Robertson left Taihape on Monday for relieving duty at Ashburton.

Mr. W. McGuiness, of Gisborne, Is visiting Taihape. He was formerly a resident of this town. Mr. F. R. Andrews, who served on the literary staff of the Taihape “Times” several years ago, and is now .employed by the Civil Aviation Department in Wellington, is leaving the Dominion shortly on a visit to Geneva.

The many friends of Mr. Tony Smith, of Whakatane, a former resident of Taihape, will regret to learn that he is seriously ill. During the senior Rugby match between Pirates and Mangaweka on Saturday two players in the Pirates team, Roy Sinclair and L. Jensen, had to retire owing to injuries. Sinclair suffered a cut ear, while Jensen appeared to be suffering from concussion when he left the field. RUGBY FOOTBALL.
