Intoxicated Motorist Fined £10 And His Licence Cancelled

"The department is very severe on drunken drivers. The travelling public has got to be protected and you must face up to the consequences,” said Mr. T. E. Barton, J.P., in the Marton Court yesterday morning to Archibald Claude McDonald, factory manager, Eltham, whe pleaded guilty to a charge of being found intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car at Turakina late Monday afternoon. The Bench convicted and lined McDonald £lO (costs £1 Ils) and cancelled his driver’s licence for six months. With Mr. Barton was Mr. H. Y. Cameron, J.P.

Sergeant W. J. Brown, who prosecuted, said that defendant was driving from Eltham to Palmerston North. He left Wanganui early in the afternoon. About three or four miles south of Turakina defendant overturned his car and, after righting it, decided to return to Turakina. It was while maAing a right-hand turn into the garage a, Turakina that defendant was involved in a collision with another car. Defendant was subsequently arrested ana certified by a doctor as unfit to drive a car. Defendant said he was a married man, aged 44 years, and had two children He.travelled back to Turakina after overturning his car at about 10 miles per hour, as the vehicle was without oil. The other car involved in the accident was driven by Mr. A C. Dawson, of Marton. Both vehicles were damaged. PERSONAL Mrs. E. Virtue (Napier), Dominicn president of the Methodist Women s Missionary Union, who has been the guest of Mrs. H. Pi-owse at the Marton Methodist Parsonage, left by bus yesterday morning for Wanganui. Mr. W. Shepherd, Cro.ton Road. Marton, who severed the thumb ano. a portion of his right hand while using a circular saw on Saturday morn'ng, is still an inmate of the Wanganui Public Hospital, and is likely to' be a patient for another month. Mr. R. G. Jones, a visiting English businessman, addressed the Marton Rotary Club on Monday night on human problems of the day. He was thanked by Mr. F. J. Christensen.
