Chasers’ Good Display Over Awapuni Fences

PALMERSTON N., Last Night (Sp.) —A grand school by Lanoma, Vernon and Baksoon over eight steeplechase fences was the star attraction at Awapuni this morning. Lanoma was ridden by T. Paul, Vernon by T. Poad. and Baksoon by M. Andrews. Vernon was in the middle, jumping very smoothly. His only mistake was at the eighth fence, which he hooked. Lanoma- on the inner, jumped very soundly, never put ang a foot wrong. Baksoon, on the outer, was at a disadvantage rounding the turns and. particularly against the light, was scratchy on occasions. However, his best jumps were at r.he last two fences. Voltage (J. Hely) aiso tackled the “country” but at the second brush he took off too soon and dipped badly on landing. Hely went down on a shoulder but made a quick recovery from the shaking he received. Otamaire (T. Goff) jumped one brush. Among those schooled on Monday were Red Glare, Terra Firma and Sten. Keen Wit (13. Collins) and Sten (T. Paul) were companions over four steeplechase fences this morning They gave a satisfactory display. There were several schooling bouts I over the hurdles and among the best of them was that of Argumentative (Poad) and Christopher Wren (Andrews). They tackled six flights with the pace right on and gave a line exhibition. Poad will ride Vernon and Argumentative at Woodville, and Andrews has been engaged for Baksoon and Incident. The fast work took place wide out on the course proper, where the going was good. Tremello (Hodren), Matara (Hely) and Lady Oratory (D. Harris) were associated in a useful trial over seven furlongs. Though they were not required to do much be'ter than 15 to the furlong early, tney came home well to complete in 1.39 3-5 Battle Strife worked well over five in 1.7 2-5- and Lady Melva (J. P. Carter) and Sir Oswald (W. L. Aitken) were timed to run the last three of half a mile in 42. Specialist (Ryan) and Le Cri covered four furlongs in 58. and Lady Orelio (Carter) and Lord Luck (Hely) their last three in 40 3-5. ! Great Success (Aitken) and Beau-. form (J. Harris) went away from thesix barrier and worked very smoothly , throughout. They ran the full dis- ( tance in 1.22 4-5, the last three in 42 ; 2Red Glare (Aitken) worked once round really well at 15 to the furlong-; Sonia (B. Wood' ar.d Serrano ID. Harris) sprinted half a mile in 55 4-5. breaking 41 for the last three. Playtos (J. Harris) worked over seven at about 16 to the furlong. i Bonifort and Golden Casket worked early, being schooled over six flights cf hurdles. They jumped really well. Kippo (Hodren) and Dandy Ninth (Carter) galloped seven furlongs in 1.40. the last three in 41. It was a good trial. Lord Holland (HUD and Hypholm (Ryan) came home well to cover half a mile in 55 3-5. Field Marshal was given a “pipe opener” down the straight West Meath (J. Harris) and Incident (Carter) galloped a mile in 1.55 3- together all the way. They ran the last three in 42 3-5.
