WAVERLEY STEEPLES TO GAIETY; SECOND SEAL'S BESLEY MEMORIAL

Gaiety won the Waverley Steeplechase and Foxland the Westholm Hurdles, the two jumping events at the Waverley Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday. The principal Hat event, the Besley Memorial, went to Second Seal, and the open sprint, the Wairoa Handicap, was won by Ozami, both these winners scoring comfortably.

Though the weather was rather cold in the morning the day proved line and racing conditions were good, the track being slightly holding after rain during the week. The attendance was fully up to last year’s crowd but the totalisator at £30,395 10s. showed a slight decrease of £579 10s on last year’s £30.975. Only one each-way favourite. Mr Moutoa in the Symes Memorial Maiden, was successful, but Foxland and Gaiety were place favourites and Ozami, Dallas, Lackagh and Guerdon were all well backed . Second Sealhowever, returned a double-figure dividend and there were some generous place returns. Gaiety was the find of the minor jumping events last winter, the Gay Eoy mare winning four races, including the Rangitikei Hunt Cup, the Eg-mont-Wanganui Hunt Cup and tUe Richard Roake Steeples at the Dannevirke Hunt meeting at Hastings. She gave a good display m view of the approaching winter ’chasing. Foxland added to nis good record, at Waverley, where he won the Westholm Hurdles two years ago and was runner-up to Specialist last year. Awapuni trainer J J. Waller turned' out two winners in Gaiety and Mr; Moutoa, and M. Brooks. Stratford, was successful with Foxland and Second Seal. Another trainer to carryoff a double was H V. McKenzieMarton. whose stable shelters Lackagh and Guerdon. GAIETY'S STEEPLES Gaiety gave a good edhibition of jumping to win the Waverley Steeplechase in an interesting finish, with Gay Rouen and Old Joe in the minor places, the latter pair paying good prices in view- of their performances.; Barras led for over a mile but came to grief at the stands double the' second time round, leaving Captain Jesse, Hemokai- Fluffy, Gay RouenMalimint, Old Joe and Voltage to lead as the final circuit was commenced. Gaiety then moved up to hold third' place behind Gay Rouen and Malimint at the half-mile, Fluffy, Money Machine, Old Joe ano Duality being next. Gaiety and Gay Rouen ran for the last fence just in front of Old Joe and Duality, the last-named coming to grief. Safely over, Gaiety held on to win by a length trom Gay Rouenwho was a similar margin ahead of Old Joe. Voltage was a fair fourth. , ahead of Malimint, War Effort and Captain Jesse. The well-backed Cherry Grove was a Jong way back, last. HURDLES TO FOXLAND Though headed for a brief period in the middle stages, Foxland proved too good for the opposition in the Westholm Hurdles and won nicely from First Act and the win favourite. Night Charm. Foxland dropped in behind Lord Leo and Beau Court as they ran out of the straight but jumped into the lead again at the five fur-

longs. being followed past the halfmile by Night and First Act, with Odysseus several lengths backahead of Orderman, Waratangi and Royal Scholar. The leading trio were well clear at the *ast hurdle, the inside panel of which had been flattened, and Foxland was holding First Act safely over the final stages. Night Charm was half a length away third, and Odysseus, 20 lengths back, was fourth, ahead of Waratangi. There was a gap of ten lengths to Awaroa Stream and Royal Scholar (who was favouring a leg on returning to scale). BESLEY MEMORIAL Hostess and Mission, well backed, failed to gain placings in the Besley Memorial, Second Seal scoring a comfortable win from Atomic and Mr Pym, all at good prices. Knight .Templar was chopped back at barrier rise and Second Seal went to the front straight away, leading Mission, Aristea. Atomic, Chef d Oeuvre and White Cliffs past the six furlongs. The field bunched behind the pacemaker at the half-mile- with Alright making a forward move and Mr Pym also improving his position. At the straight entrance Atomic, Mr Pym. Arvastep, Morotai and Mission were all within striking distance, but Second Seal ran on too strongly for ihem, winning by five lengths. Atomic- Mr Pym- Knight Templar and Mission were spread across the track and were placed in j the order named, witn Hostess at the! rear of the field. EASY FOR OZAMI The Te Rapa-trained Ozami spreadeagled the sprint field to win easily by four lengths from the hot favourite Sir Royal and The Pagan. Sir Royal and The Pagan had jumped out smartly but at tne end of a furlong Ozami had dashed into a clear lead, followed by Mangurakau, The Pagan and Sir Royal, with Bright Side,- Broiealice and Celebration next. Ozami led the other trio into the straight, with a gap of five lengths back to Broiealice and Bright Side. Sir Royal was wide out as they straightened up, and Ozami came away for an easy w»n. The Pagan was a length behind Sir Royal, and i there was a gap to Bright Side, who; just beat Celebration, with Mangura- i kau next. | MR MOI TO AS FIRST WIN Always in the leading division Mi Moutoa cut down Takapo over the final furlong of the Symes Memorial Maiden and won mure comfortably than might appear from the official margin of a neck. He was confidently ridden to hold off the fast-finishing Silver Line. Royal Drake made a dab along the inside rail to beat Takapo for third, and then came Lady < t ’uick- Neptune’s Daughter and Glide In. DALLAS ALL THE WAY Dalas jumped cut smartly in the Kohi Hack Handicap and led all the'

way for a comparatively easy win. The Tc Hero mare was followed at the half-mile by i_oid Croupier, Master McGrath, Confess and Crusanne. Wave Crest dwelling slightly when the tapes went up but making up leeway. Dallas and Lord Croupier were first into the straight from Confess and Master McGrath, but Dallas ran on best to win comfortably. Master McGrath just as easily beat Confess, who was finish ng on- and thep came Lord Croupier, Gerry’s GiftForeign Mail, Wave Crest and Crusanne. NGUTUWERA HACK CUP The Marton-trained Lackagh, never further back than fourth, ran on strongly to win the iNgutuwera Hack Cup after Lionne Rouge- Zala and Secret Ruler had hid turns in the lead. Secret Ruler led at the three from Zala, Lackagh- General Sand, Foveran, Winsome Lad and Surrender, but Lackagh put in his claim a furlong from home and was holding the outsider Winsome Lad at the finish. Foveran cam*? home well for 'third, ahead of Secret Ruler and Early Bird. GUERDON WINS THE LAST Two Marton-trained horses fought out the finish in the concluding eventthe President’s Hack Handicap. Just when the each-way favourite- Broiesome, appeared likely to succeed, Guerdon, handily placed in the middle stages, came home well to win by a length. White Diamond came from several places back at the three Jurlongs to take third money from Miss Beau- and then came Nuptial- Vanity Fair and Mr Justice Polleta, who had led at the haif-nule. dropped out of the picture in the straight.
