Ngakoti Fancied For Nelson Cup Today

The array of attractive trophies which has been provided for winning owners and trophies in some of the events ensured that generous support would be forthcoming from North island- stables for the Nelson Jockey Club's meeting, which opens today and will be concluded on Tuesday. As it will be followed by the Marlborough meeting at Blenheim next week-end advantage will be taken by many to make a holiday of the trip. Good fields are carded, though there is the usual number of dual engagements. These, however, will not weaken the fields for the principal events very much. With Barrage and Gay Stroller going to Hastings and Wild Note likely to run in the sprint, Detain may be topweight in the Nelson Cup. An Easter winner in Leyma is also engaged, and in addition there is Ngakoti, winner of the Tamatete Handicap at Awapuni. Recent form will probably make most appeal, and Ngakoti, Leyma and Falconbridge should be well supported. The improving Wild Note heads the lield for the seyen-turlong Newman Handicap, and the chances are that he will be the favourite. However, last year’s dual sprint winner at Nelson, Veine d’Or, is again engaged and Determination-Lady Myrtle bracket will also appeal.

The field for the hurdle race is a large one for a Nelson meeting. There should be some interesting racing, with the following likely to be web supported:— 11.0: First Hack Hurdles.—Master Raymond, Becalm, Rockanui. 11.45: Novice Stakes. —Legal Document, Nalla's Pride, Madine. 12.30: Wakefield Trot.—Aristocrat, Firefly, Jack Peterson. 1.15: Hope Handicap.—Announcer, Chaka, Jolly Robin. 2.0: Nelson Cup. —Ngakoti, Falconbridge, Leyma. 2.45: Brightwater Trot.—Aristocrat, Helen Grattan, Firefly. 3.30: Newman Handicap.—Wild Note, Veine d’Or, Lady Myrtle. 4.15: Tahuna Hack Handicap.—Grey Arch, The Rip, Cheerful Night.
