COMMUNISM'S SPREAD

ARRESTS IN ARGENTINA BiAenOS AIRES, April 18 (Recd. 7.40 pm). —The Argentine Federal police announced today that an investigation of two East European immigrant organisations had uncovered plans for a large-scale Communist infiltration into Argentina. The police said they raided the headquarters of the Slavic Union and its allied union of Byelo-Russian Cultural Organisations, on April 10 and seized office files. The raids coincided with the round-up of suspects, including 57 leaders of the Slavic Union and 26 persons associated with the local Communist school. The police stated that the Slavic i Union was an instrument of Inter--1 national Communism and the school '■ was giving selected workers advanced ■ courses, involving illegal activities for ’ direct action when, and if, special cir- > cumstances developed. 1 A semi-official report today said the Slavic Union had been working closely with East European diplomats in Buenos Aires to promote Communist sentiments among the Slavic colony in i Argentina. ’ A later message says that Govern--1 ment troops today took over strike ! headquarters of 14 unions who called 1 a general strike at Salta, which re- . suited in several riots in which four ■ were killed and 13 wounded. It is I estimated that about 3000 of 10,000 I .workers at Salta obeyed the strike ■.call. They included 50 policemen.
