TRIALS OF CHURCHMEN

CUBA WANTS 15-MAN INQUIRY BODY TO REPORT TO U.N.O.

NEW YORK, April 19 (Rcc. 6 pm).—Cuba today urged the United Nations to send a 15-man commission to investigate the trials of the Hungarian Cardinal Mindszenty, and of Bulgarian Protestant clergymen.

Cuba’s proposal was submitted in a surprise resolution at the end of the Political Committee’s session and the Commission adjourned until tomorrow to give the delegates time to think it over. The Cuban proposal urges: (1) Tnat the Commission should conduct an investigation without prejudice to the rights of the Big Three Powers to act against Balkan Governments for alleged violations of human rights under peace treaties. (2) That the United Nations should bar Hungary and Bulgaria from membership of the United Nations pending the Commission’s report. (3) That the Commission should report to the next session of the General Assembly in September.
