CLASHES IN COLOMBIA Soldiers And Armed Civilians
BOGOTA (Colombia), April 17 (Recd 9.50 pm).—Soldiers clashed with about 200 armed civilians in a bloody battle at the village of Chita, a few miles northeast of Bogota, today. The first reports of the number killed range from one to 40. Houses and plantations were burned to the ground by raiders before the soldiers intervened, but the damage is not yet known. The Chita incident is only one of a number of clashes that flared up throughout the country today as the nine-day political truce proclaimed by President Perez ended. The truce had been proclaimed in an effort to prevent demonstrations on or near the first anniversary of the assassination of the left wing Liberal leader, Jorge Gaitan. It was Gaitan's killing that touched off a wave of rioting throughout the country during the Pan-American conference last year.
