PLEA TO RAISE THE LIVING STANDARDS OF ASIATICS IN PACIFIC
NEW YORK, April 17, (Recd 6 pm).—General Carlos Romulo, leader of the Philippine United Nations delegation, today called on the United States to follow up the North Atlantic Treaty with measures to improve the economic development of nations of the Pacific and Asia.
Romulo said, in an interview, that undeij present conditions no military alliance was needed for Pacific Asia, but there was pressing need for a fight against Communism by raising the living standards of hundreds of millions of Asiatic peoples. He added that the Far Eastern countries would derive tremendous encouragement if a United States official of the standing of Paul Hoffman visited Far Eastern Pacific capitals to offer United States assistance in preparing thei r development programmes.
