Another Harlan County Police Chief Shot

NEW YORK, April 17 (Rec. 9 p.m.) —The Harlan County police chief, Ambrose Metcalfe, was murdered tonight in the main street of Shields (Kentucky), five miles from the township of Evarts, which has had six police chiefs in the last eight months. Metcalfe was shot in front of a restaurant whose manager was arrested and charged with Metcalfe’s murder. The arrested man was recently acquitted on a charge of illegal possession of whisky in Harlaih County, which is dry. It was bootlegging that lay behind gun-play in Evarts where, since August one police chief was murdered and three others resigned after a few weeks in office.
