THREE WANGANUI WINNERS ON FEILDING OPENING DAY

Wanganui stables proved very successful on Saturday at Feilding, carrying off three races on the opening day of the Feilding Jockey' Club’s Easter meeting. Champagne winning the open sprint, Sweet Revenge the Onepuhi Hack, and Already the Taonui Nursery. In addition, Hostess finished third in the Feilding Cup to Loyal Bian, who is raced by the president of Lie Egmont Racing

Club. For barkers it was not a good day, six of the nine winners—there was one race in divisions—being at '.double figures, and the win dividends totalled just over £lOO. an average of more than £l2 10s.

After heavy rain the previous day the club was favoured with fine weather for the holiday, and a large attendance was recorded. This was reflected in the totalisator turnover of £73.306, an increase of £6543 over the £66,763 put through on the corresponding day last year. The track, though soft early, improved for the later races. LOYAL BIAN'S CUP Loyal Bian returned a double-figure dividend in the Feilding Cup when he took the lead off Avenger in the straight and won handily, with the little-fancied Hostess paying nearly double figures for a place. Square Dink and Knight Templar were several lengths clear for half the journey, but then Barrage, Avenger, Loyal Bian, The Missioner. Gay Stroller and Hostess closed on the leaders. Avenger turned for home ahead of Barrage and Loyal Bian, but the lastnamed finished on too strongly and had the race won a furlong from home. Hostess came on for third, ahead of Langue d'Or, Night Charm, The Missioner and Barrage. SPRINT TO CHAMPAGNE Champagne sprang a surprise in the Mangaone Handicap, winning the open sprint comfortably at double figures after having been slow out from the barrier. At the end of two furlongs Air Belle had a break of two lengths on Deseado. Playboy, Full of Fun and Champagne. Air Belle was still the leader entering the straight, with Deseado, Playboy, Mangarukau and Champagne all within range, but over the final furlong Champagne swept down to win, going away, by a length from Air Belle. Playboy, three-quarters of a length away, just beat Deseado for third, with Ozami, Tommy Gun and Mangurakau next. NEPTUNE JUVENILE Already had an all-the-way win in the Taonui nursery. The Wanganuiowned and trained Neptune gelding jumped out well and was followed at the half-mile by Millie’s Choice, with a gap to Lakeside, Lady Lucina, Servile and Cyclops. Millie s Choice was within half a length of Already on the home turn, but the Neptune gelding ran on best to win by two lengths from Servile, who finished fast on the outside to beat Cyclops by a head. Defence and Waiford were almost in line with the third horse, and Ballet. Millie’s Choice and Cool Waters were next.

Roman Duke waited on the leaders till the final stages of the Kawa Kawa Hurdles and then came away to win nicely. Delinquent fell at the first fence. At the half-mile Master Raymond, Incident, Rockanui, Roman Duke and Becalm were racing in close order, but at the last fence but one the riderless Delinquent brought down Incident, and Becalm turned for home just ahead of Master Raymond. Rockanui and Roman Duke. The lastnamed finished on too solidly for Becalm. Four lengths back was Rockanui, just ahead of Master Raymond, and then came Vernon and Tudor Chief. BRACKETED PAIR WIN The bracketed Dallas and Royal Crown won the respective divisions of the Maiden Stakes. Dallas jumped out smartly in the first division and led all the way to win by a comfortable margin from Master McGrath and Mister Moutoa, who were always ahead of the rest. Beauform, Burnous and Great Success followed. Honey Dew and Neutron led to the half-mile in the second division with Waimate, Royal Crown and Wave Crest next. Then Royal Crown and Wave Crest took over and ran home ahead of Waimate. There was a gap to Loyal Camp and Neutron. ONE FOR SWEET REVENGE It was not a strong field that lined up for the Onepuhi Hack Handicap, but the Raetihi-owned and Wanganuitrained Sweet Revenge won very comfortably. After Boyhood and Brookland had made tne early running Sweet Revenge took over and was never headed. He was attended at the half-mile by Result, Boyhood. Brookland and Secret Ruler, but in the run home he held his own to win under a hold by three lengths from Brookland, who beat Boyhood by half a length. Result, fourth, was ahead of Kumari and Malimint. Formerly trained at Wanganui, Billy Ruff’n won tne Ongo Hack Handicap, for apprentice riders, at good odds. Dunkrevin made most of the pace but was closely attended by Retrieve. Early Bird and Billy Ruff’n at tlie straight entrance. Then Early Bird took over but Billy Ruff’n rap) her down to win by a couple of lengths. Murrayfield finished fast for third, just ahead of Retrieve and Action, who was never well placed, with Dunkrevin next.

Merry Bing showed the expected improvement after his race at Levin to win the Halcombe Handicap comfortably. He accompanied I he pacemaker. Faultina, along the back and trailed Faultina and Eireann into the straight, with Piioitoi and Gay Gordon next. As soon as Eireann ran to the front Merry Bing took her measure and won well. Faultina -finished on again to beat Eireann by two lengths for second, with Gay Gordon a close fourth and Pitoitoi and Atomic next. Details of results:— KAWA KAWA HURDLES.
