ARRIVALS BY THE LINER MATAROA

WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA)._ Bringing 367 passengers, including 82 children, the liner Mataroa berthed at Wellington at 6 p.m. on Saturday, and is due to sail for Port Chalmers at 6 a.m. tomorrow (Monday). Many of the passengers were Scottish settler coming to various parts of the country. The remainder were chiefly New Zealanders returning home from Britain. A group of British naval officers on loan for three years to the New Zealand Navy were among the passengers. They were. Lieut. R. S. F. Webber who will go to the Kaneiri; Lieut. S. H. Townend, who will go to the Philomel; Commander (E) E. A. G. Whittle, Mr. J. Cann, and Mr. W. J. Staples, who will go to the Bellona. Mr. Cann was accompanied by his wife. Squadron-Leader C. C. N. Johnston, M.8.E., formerly Director of Manning of the R.N.Z.A.f. returned after a six' months’ course at an R.A.F. staff college in Berkshire. At the conclusion of the course he was attached for a short time to the Air Ministry. Also attending the course was Wing - Commander K. Trigance. D.F.C., who remained at London headquarters. Dr. W. S. Alexander, senior lecturer in pathology, Otago Medical School, returned with his wife after two years aboard on a post graduate course studying neurological pathology. He said that a laboratory for the study of neurological path ology would be established at Otago University. His trip overseas had been sponsored by the University and Mental Hygiene Division of the Department of Health jointly as a preliminary to the establishment of the laboratory A 24-year-old French dress designer, M. Rene Thevenot, is on her way to Dunedin to become a lecturer in dress designing at the Home Science School of the University of Otago. M. Thevenot is under contract for one year. He is a member of'a Vichy family associated for many years with the dress-designing business.
