New Zealand Swimmers Selected To Train For British Empire Games

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night (P.A.) -The following swimmers have been selected by the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association to undertake training with a view to qualifying for lhe New Zealand team for the British Empire Games:— Men. —Freestyle: W. M. Amos and R. Lucas (Auckland), N. Chambers, C. Chambers, P. McNally, and R. Hatch well (Canterbury), and L. Barry (West Coast). Backstroke: P. Mathieson (Auckland) and T. E. Wilson (Otago). Breaststroke: D. Dowse (Wellington) and T. Eagle (Auckland). J. Shanahan (Auckland) who is at present in Australia, will be added to the list when he returns to New Zealand. Diving: D. Begg (Canterbury) and W. Jaine (Auckland). Women. - Freestyle: Misses B. Casey . (Wellington), M. Menzies (Southland), W. Griffin, N. Bridson, H. McKenzie, J. Hastings, and M. Jacobs (Auckland). Backstroke: Miss Ngaire Lane and Miss J. Stewart (Otago). Breaststroke: Misses M. Tigue (Wellington). H Smith (West Coast). M. Sweeney (Auckland), and JI. Forsyth (Otago). Diving: Misses B. Moore (Otago). K. Small (Canterbury), and W. Chapman (Wellington). The following time standards have been-set as lhe requLite for swimmers to qualify for final nomination: 100 yards freestyle, men 57sec., women 66 sec. 440 yards freestyle, men 5m in. 15 sec.; women, Gmin. 1650 yards freestyle, men 22min. lOsee. 100 yards backstroke, men, 68sec.; women 74 sec. 220 yards breaststroke, men, 3min 4sec.; women, 3min. 24sec.
