N.Z. DELEGATES AT TIMBER CONFERENCE IN TASMANIA
HOBART, March 28 (Reed. 11.40 pm).—New Zealand delegates are attending a conference in Launceston of the Eastern States' timber industry stabilisation committee. The New Zealand Federated Sawmillers’ Association is represented by Mr. L. E. Baxgent and the New Zealand Forestry Service by Mr. W. C. Ward. Opening the conference the chairman, Mr G. G. Leitch (Tasmania) said Australia’s timber production had increased from 691,000,000 super feet in 1938-39, to more than 1,000,000,000 super feet in 1947-48. He added, however, that if production could not be still further increased Australia would have to import from New Zealand and elsewhere.
