Presentations Made To Rev. And Mrs. Gamlen On Eve Of Departure
A large number of parishioners, including several from tile outlying districts, gathered in the Marton Parish Hall following the evening service in St. Stephen's Anglican Church on Sunday to farewell Rev. and Mrs. W. P. B. Gamlen, who leave this week to take up residence at Tawa Flat, Wellington, where Mr. Gamlen has been appointed assistant curate. For the past two years, Mr. Gamlen has held a similar position in Marton and during his short sojourn in the town has taken a lively interest in several organisations, particularly the Marton branch of the R.S.A. and the Marton Junior Chamber of Commerce. Special harvest thanksgiving services were held in the Anglican Church on Sunday, and in the evening Mr. Gamlen preached his final sermon, when he spoke on "Sacrifice.” Supper was served in the hall after the service and later in the evening opportunity was taken by several speakers to thank Mr. and Mrs. Gamlen for their work in Marton and to extend to them every success in their new sphere. The vicar, Rev. Nigel Williams, spoke on behalf of the vestry and presented Mr. Gamlen with a book, and Mr. A. C. Birch, people’s 'warden, on behalf of the parishioners, presented Mr. and Mrs. Gamlen with a cheque. On behalf of the church choir, Mrs. L. Walters made a presentation to Mrs. Gamlen. Mr. George Ibbett, a director of the Marton Junior Chamber of Commerce, spoke in appreciative terms of Mr. Gamlen's work with the Junior Chamber. As a result of the harvest thanksgiving services some four or five cases of foodstuffs were contributed towards the Aid-for-Britain campaign. DIVERSION OF BUSES OPPOSED BY HUNTERVILLE. After considering a letter from Mr. G. Crichton, regarding the proposed diversion of the New Zealand Railway Road Service buses through Marton and asking for support against the proposal, the Hunterville Chamber of Commerce has decided to send a letter to the Railway Department protesting against the proposed deviation of the railway bus service. A small committee was set up to meet and confer with Mr. Crichton, and to give him the support and aid of the chamber. It was stated that the proposal was that the buses would stop in Hunterville only to pick up passengers, and the refreshment rooms would be in Marton. The diversion would also mean that the Greatford area would be without a bus service. HARRIER SEASON TO OPEN IN MARTON ON APRIL 9.
