RESEARCH SHIP SENDS ROCKET 68 MILES INTO STRATOSPHERE

LIMA (Peru). March 27. —Captain Thomas Ahroon, commander ot the United States Navy research task force, announced that the first highaltitude sounding rocket ever launched from a ship travelled over 68 miles into the upper atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean last week. A 20ft. rocket and two other rockets, all known as "aerobees,” were launched from the Norton Sound, the American Navys’ first guided missile ship, from a position several hundred miles off Peru. All the rockets carried automatic radio transmitters which relayed back to the ship data about their flight. The information obtained would add significantly to knowledge of the upper stratosphere-
