DEATH OF NOTED MAORI CHIEF IN SOUTH ISLAND

DUNEDIN, Last Night (P.A.)— The Maori race has lost a leading personality and authority on its traditions and customs with the death of John Matapura Ellison, a rangatira of the Ngaltahu tribe. He was 84 years of age, and spent most of his life at Puketeraki. near Karitane, where he had a farm. Mr Ellison was born at Otakou, Otago Peninsula, on June 3, 1864, and he was a prominent advocate in the protracted negotiations with the Government for compensation payments in what is now known as the Ngaitahu claim, which has only recently been settled. A first-class licensed interpreter, Mr Ellison conducted many major cases before the Native Land Court. Mr Ellison was the eldest son of Raniera Ellison, chief of the Te Atiawa tribe of Taranaki. His mother was Hana Nikura Ellison, granddaughter of Taiaroa and of Hinewhareua, an elder sister of Karetai. Raniera Ellison and Karetai were both paramount chiefs of the Ngaitahu.
