Children Show More Interest In School Work, Says Minister

The view that children today were interested in their school work and did not need driving with a strap was expressed by the Minister of Education (Mr. McCombs), speaking at the annual conference in Wanganui last night of the Dominion Federation of School Committees. "When I was a lad at school and a stranger entered the room, we sat back with our mouths open and followed all his movements,” said the Minister. Since being appointed Minister of Education, however, he had attended many schools and had been amazed to notice the change. When the Minister and his party entered a classroom the children would rise and say "Good Morning,” after which they would resume their seats and carry on with their work. This was because they were interested in thei r class work and he could not believe that children such as this did less than others who had to be driven with a strap in the days gone by, said the Minister.
