College Rowing. Began on Tuesday, the inter-house rowing races of the Wanganui Collegiate School were continued last evening, when Marris beat Selwyn by three and a-half lengths, and Hadfield beat Harvey by two lengths. Further races will be held on Friday, Saturday and Monday.

Vamp Salvaged. Sunk following a collision at the combined speed-boat and rowing regatta last Saturday, the speed-boat Vamp was salvaged on Tuesday. An inspection Of the craft revealed no serious damage from the mishap, ana the owner, Mr. F. Luff, is confident that he will soon have the boat in racing trim again.

Street Appeal Result. The street appeal held yesterday in aid of the Aubert Home of Compassion yielded more than £2OO. This is an increase on last year’s effort. In addition to this amount £2 has been lodged by Mrs. H. A. Lambert, at the “Chronicle," for the appeal. Last night the Sisters of Compassion expressed their thanks to the organisers, collectors, and to the public for their generous support. Demands On Board.

Heavy demands were being made at present on the Wanganui Education Board and school committees could assist by not pressing too much for less important work, said the chairman, Mr. W. B. Tennent, at the annual conference in Wanganui yesterday of the Dominion Federation of School Committees. Increasing school rolls and the need for more accommodation were creating difficulties, but the board was working on a building programme which meant attention being given to the most important of works. Wanganui Passed By. Rerget that the itinerary for the forthcoming tour by South Australian farmers did not include Wanganui was expressed at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui Provincial Executive ot Federated Farmers yesterday. After a brief discussion it was decided to write to the Tourist Bureau, whicn mapped out the tour, asking if arrangements could be made for the party to stop here. The executive also decided to write to the Tourist Development and Publicity Committee of the City Council seeking their support in the matter to have Wanganui included in future tours. Southerly Change. After a westerly gale on Tuesday with much rain, the wind changed to a southerly quarter early yesterday morning Wanganui experienced another unsettled day. Some very heavy rain squalls passed over the city in the earlier part of the day and a marked drop in temperatures followed the southerly change. The wind was fresh to strong for the most part and seas along the coast were still rough. Two coastal traders, the Hauturu and Foxton, were to have sailed from Wanganui last night, but their movements were dependent on the weather. At 3 p.m. yesterday the barometer was rising at 29.82in5. Education Problems. “Large classes, temporary classrooms, and a shortage of teachers are phases of the education system giving concern to the Education Department, education boards, and everyone interested in the schools and pupils,” stated Mr. J. C Batt (Wanganui) in his presidential address to the Dominion Federation of School Committees at Wanganui yesterday. “With a wave of five-year-olds approaching in the near future, it appears that the situation will be worse before it is permanently better. The primer rooms will be the first to feel the impact. I believe,” Mr. Batt added, “that those in responsible positions are alive to the problems ahead and I am sure that this conference will appreciate the need for constructive suggestions.”
