Variety Of Remits At Conference Of School Committees Federation

Remits touching on school buildings and accommodation, school residences, staffing, admisistration and other questions were dealt with at the annual conference in Wanganui yesterday of the Dominion Federation or School Committees. The conference will be continued this morning, when further remits will be discussed. Conference reiterated that the utmost endeavour be made to reduce the size of classes to 30 pupils. A Wellington remit to this effect added that attention should be drawn to the frustration affecting teachers as a result of the curriculum in a way that called for more and more individual attention of the pupils without the necessary corollary of reduced numbers. A further remit adopted by conference was that the Education Department be urged to build departmental houses and-or hostels for its teacherb in both urban and rural areas when and where required. From Otago caime a remit, also carried, asking that in Grade VI anu VII schools an extra grade A assistant woman be appointed, wherever practicable, to the infant room in order to release the infant mistress from staff teaching and enable her to devote her time to’ the proper organisation and supervision of the whole infant 1 department. , Wellington remits approved by con- ; ference urged that an immediate imj•.rovement be effected in the distribution of school stationery, particularly 1 , writing pads, and that the authorities lift the standard of school stationery in order that it come into line with j pre-war manufacture.
