MASTERTON SHOW AT SOLWAY; ENTRIES HAVE SLIGHTLY INCREASED

MASTERTON, Last Night (PA).— The Masterton -show opened at Solway today in tine weather and there was a good attendance of the public. Entries totall 2679 as compared with 2566 in 1947 when the last show was held, there being no show last year on account of polio. The number of sheep, 532, is slightly less than in 1947. Cattle, 326, show an increase, and horses, 802, a decrease of 18. The show will be officially opened tomorrow by Mr A. R. Cutler, V.C., Australian High Commissioner. Championship awards were:— Romney Marsh (natural condition): Ram, J. Rayner (Masterton); reserve, F. D. and E- G. Shaw (Masterton). Ewe and reserve champion: A. P. Southey and Sons (Masterton). Beef.—Shorthorn built J. Holden (Hastings). Milking Shorthorn: Bull, W. Brady (Dalefield); reserve, S. C. Gallon (Dalefield). Cow: W. Brady; reserve, D. Field (Greytown). Pen of sheep for freezing: Champion and reserve, Harvey Bros. (Rangituamau).
