Fitzgerald, Gisborne, United Nations was a useful performer both on the flat and over hurdles. Jottings Highland Fling earned £4OO when lie broke the world grass track mile record at Hutt Park. The Canterbury Park Club did not have to pay anything when Highland Fling's brother, Highland Kill, broke the two-year-old mile trotting record on Saturday. Takanini Activities A very sound effort over seven furlongs by th e Storey Memorial Handicap candidate Quick March was the main trial at Takanini on Tuesday by candidates for the Waikato Racing Club's summer meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday. The outside grass, with th e poles out about 15ft., was in fairly good order- Others to. work well included Martial Song, Tudor Prince. Sleepy Jane, Gollen, Coonbridge, Balmacara, Idle Jest and Vice Chancellor. Third Win on End When Good Century won the first division of the Arawa Nursery Handicap at Rotorua last Saturday he scored his third success on end. All were within a fortnight, as he had won previously at Tauranga on January 29, and at Mafa’mata on February 5. Mr M. Khan, part-owner of Good Century, paid 2400gns for e “olt by Pherozshah from Flying Qtlex at the national sal e of yearlings at Trentham last month.

First Placing Since 1947 Beverley Volo’s win in the Aviation Handicap at Addington was her first glimpse of form since she ran fourth to Fairy Wings, Sur e Harvest and Jason’s Quest at the N.Z. Cup meeting in 1947. Now trained by C. S. Donald at Belfast, she may win again, as she has more than average speed, but she often mars her chances at the start by breaking; A seven-year-old mare, Beverley Volo is by Lusty Volo from Beverley King, the dam also of Gamble King, by Native King—Beverley Audubon, by Great Audubon—St. Ursula, by Papanui. Beverley Audubon was the dam of winners in Princess Beverley and Cavalryman.

Efficiency Plan Th e Gore Racing Club has completed an inter-communication system which should be a big factor in bringing about increased efficiency during the progress of meetings. A master telephone has been installed in the secretary’s office, from which direct contact can be made with other telephones in the totalisator house, the judge s box, the photo-finish room, the broadcasting box. the jockeys’ room, and tlje number board on the course. A loud-speaker has also been fitted up in th e jockeys’ room with a view, to giving a warning to any unauthorised person entering the premises. A satisfactory trial was given to the system last week-end.

Promising Young Trotter One of the most promising young trotters in commission in the North Island is Lillian Mac, winner of the Taupiri Handicap at Claudelands on Saturday. She is a four-year-old mare by Desmond's Prid e from Prestigena, by Maxegin from Sincerity, and is trained by G- Mitchell at Cambridge for Mrs M. Becker. She was formerly trained at Addington by C. Bryce. Since joining Mitchell’s team she has recorded two wins and a second placing in four starts. In all this season she has had ten starts for two wins and three placings. She seems to have become more solid since being under Mitchell and she can be expected to win again at short notice. Gold Bar Gelding

The winner of the Waikato Cup at th e third summer meeting of the Waikato Trotting Club, Tyrone Power, is a six-year-old gelding by Gold Bar from Lynley de Oro. by Rey de OroWatty’s Wish, by Drusus from a mare by Advocate. In 16 starts this season Tyron e Power has recorded four wins and one placing. At his first start at a matinee meeting at Te Awamutu he won a division of the Andrew Wallace Handicap, going on to defeat Liliaceae and Old Scotch in the Faster Handicap at the Wanganui meeting. On the second day at Wanganui he was again successful, defeating Fan Tan and Staveley's I-ad over two miles in the Liverpool Handicap. He then had nine successive unplaced performances before he ran second to Volo Bond in the Waipa Handicap at Claudelands on January 22. Tyrone Power is trained by his owner, C. Moran, at Hamilton.

English Horses The English horses, War Game and Edenbrid ,r e. arrived at Wellington this the Port Phillip en route to their Southland owners. War Game was secured recently by Mr AChisholm- Otautau. He is a three-year-old (English time) by Big Game out of Tidworth, by Bosworth-Betty, by Teddy-Miss Cavendish, who traces back to the famous Sceptre. As a two-year-old in England War Game won over five furlongs, beating a field of 12, and was placed over six furlongs. He is to join P. D. Wilson s Mosgiel team with a view to racing in New Zealand, and will then do duty at his owner’s stud- Edenbridge is a six-year-old (English time) and is to stand at (he Lorneville Stud. Invercargill. He is by th e 1940 Derby winner. Pont I’Eveque out. of Euxine, a half-sister to the good race mare BruIctte and Hotwecd. His sire was exported to Argentina in 1942 and has met with considerable success in that, country. He was recently purchased by a French stud and is to return to France in the near future. Edenbridge won three events In England from a mile to a mile and a-balf. and was placed over a mile and seven furlongs.
