EMOTIONAL JEWISH ASSEMBLY SCENE
Opening Of The First Parliament
LONDON. Feb. 15 (Recd. 7.40 pm). —The ageing President of Israel, Dr. Weizmann, at the opening ceremony of the Constituent Assembly, spoke under the stress of great emotion. He was sui’rounded by ringletted rabbinate scholars, scientists, Zionists, former terrorists and leaders of many Christian communions. A portrait of Theodor Herzl, creator of modern Zionism, flanked by two huge blue and white stars of David, hung behind the platform in the hall of the Jewish Agency building. Proceedings began with’ the singing of the Israeli National Anthem, “Haa’Tiqza,” which rises from a slow, tragic theme to a positive line: “We shall return to Jerusalem.” At this point many were in tears.
Dr. Weizmann said Jewish prophets and judges gave the world a spiritual message of fundamental civilisation. The world was now listening to hear what new message would go forth from Zion. »
