Social Security And Pensions Depts. Should Have More Liaison

Th e apparent lack of adequate liaison between the Pensions Department and the Social Security Department was criticised at a meeting of the executive of the Wanganui Returned Services Association this week when it was decided to bring the matter to the notice of Dominion headquarters. The matter was raised by a member who instanced a returned serviceman who was admitted to hospital. While in hospital, where he was bedridden, it was stated that h e had received a notice from the Pensions Department that his pension had been stopped but that he could apply to the Social Security Department for assistance. How could he apply for such aid when he was bedridden? it was asked, and members considered that in such a °ase the pensioner s tile should have been handed to the Social Security Department for action. It was also pointed out that the man concerned had no relatives to apply to the Social Security Department for him and eventually had to defer his application until he was discharged from thei hospital.

It was also decided to send the facts of the case to Dominion headquarters.
