Forecasts Of The British Labour Election Policy

LONDON, Jan. 14 (Recd. 6pm). The “News Chronicle’s” industrial correspondent claims that the first draft of the Labour Party’s policy programme, which will form the basis of the Government’s election campaign, will propose an attack upon high prices by extending Government control on the means of distribution, and that it will make an effort to win the support of th e middle classes by promising them improved conditions when the austerity years are over.

Mr. Herbert Morrison, who has been largely responsible for drafting the statement, is reported to be against advocating nationalisation for nationalisation’s sake, and wants a period of consolidation rather than further adventures in the field of .State control.

Nevertheless, a number of industries, among them shipbuilding, insurance, aircraft, shipping and chemical manufacturing, ar e all being examined with the object of submitting them to nationalisation.—(Special N.Z.P.A. Correspondent.)
