GOLD SCRIPT IS CONSIDERED TO BE IN TOP CLASS
AUCKLAND, Jan. 5. —Gold Script, by his wins in the Foal Stakes and the Royal Stakes, both achieved in ridiculously easy fashion, was the outstanding two-year-old at the Auckland meeting. In these two events the southerner, Western Winner, led him out of the barrier, but he was soon gathered in. Gold Script promises to be every bit as good at three years as his stablemate Tauloch. Folkestone W’O.s confidently backed in the final event at Ellers.ie, this marking his first attempt in open company, and he really won well. He was handily placed throughout and he held off determined challenges from Rosslare and Vigilantia. The latter was most unlucky, for he had only two horses behind him at the three furlongs and he came home brilliantly, so it looks as if he is getting back to his best. Lord Cranleign has yet to win a race, in spite of acting as runner-up to Gold Script in both the Welcome Stakes and Foal Stakes at Ellers.ie on Monday, but his chance was ruined when he was early cut-back into the ruck in a large field of 20. That he could finish a good fourth suggested that he might have won but for this incident. Much interest was taken in Silver Gull’s debut in open company, which was made in the Nathan Memorial on Monday. Her last success had been scored at Te Aroha five weeks earlier,, when she carried 9.7 against some fair hacks. In Monday’s race sh e was third to last at the end of the first furlong, yet she made a fast run on the bend going out of the straight and at the six she was on the outside disputing the lead with Conspiracy, Silver Sam and Golden Secret. That she failed to run on was not surprising. Silver Gull will probably contest the 11 furlongs handicap event at Avondale next week. Another useful galloper out of hacks that has been racing in the open handicap class in the north is Golden Secret, and she has yet to win. However, she has run several good races, including a fifth at Te Aroha and last Monday at headquarters she was close up sixth after being prominent all the way. Golden Secret is in the Goldfields Cup at Thames on Saturday and if she can handle that track then she ought to be well in line for a useful stake.
Rosslare ran good races at headquarters without being particularly lucky, and a better result may be accomplished at Thames, where sh e is in the open sprint, the Flying Handicap. One of her most dangerous opponents will probably be Grand Tourist, who went a fair race at Ellerslie last week.
