Britain To Hold Exercises To Test Air Defence
LONDON, Jan 5, (Recd 6 pm).— Britain’s early warning radar system is to be tried out In a series of training exercises in co-operation with aircraft of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, beginning on Sunday. The warning system is operated by men and women volunteers of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force Fighter Control units. In the exercises personnel, in the main, will operate away from their own units in four main sectors, one of which, “northern,” includes Scotland. One exercise a month will take place in each sector. The control and reporting system of the R.A.F. Fighter Command will operate during each exercise, and it is intended that regular fighter squadrons shall take part as the training scheme develops.
For a number of volunteers this will be their first opportunity of seeing Britain’s air defence system at work. Some of the fighter control units have been established within the last three months.
