DEATH SEVERS LINK WITH TREATY OF WAITANGI DAYS

LONDON, Jan. 5 (Rec. 8 pm).—The death of Miss Carolin Nias in London, at the age of 84. has severed a British link with early New Zealand history.

Her father, Admiral Sir Joseph Nias, K.C.8., ' who died in 1879, captained H.M.S. Herald, which brought the first Governor Of New Zealand, Captain William Hobson, to the Bay of Islands. Captain Nias witnessed the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on the six occasions as it was taken to groups of chiefs in various parts of the country. The Herald, commanded by Captain Nias, was the first British warship to sail into Wellington Harbour. Little less than 100 years later, Miss Nias flew from Blenheim to Wellington over the scene of some of her father’s exploits.
