Large fields are engaged for all the events and in the principal event, the Pahiatua Cup, there is a strong field of 15 horses, including Mesalliance, winner of the Christmas Handicap on the final day at Awapuni, Tenor Royal, winner of , the Marton Cup and likely favourite, ; and The Stormovik, who has been i running consistently. He raised his stake-earnings as a three-year-old to £9050 and his total in 16 months of racing to £13,90u. When Tauloch won £4850 last season it was a New Zealand record for a two-year-old in a season. He is already within striking distance of the £11,780 record established last year by Signal Officer. Weight-for-age and classic races during the remaining part of the season should give this robust colt numerous opportunities to increase his present earnings.

Berkett stated that there was a possibility of the champion leaving for Australia earlier than was intendedIN MONEY NINE TIMES
Although he had only two wins on the opening day of the Wairarapa races, G. R. Tattersail rode four other horses into second place to pay dividends. On Monday he rode two winners in succession, Royal Victor and Royal Spur, and in the next race on Leyma he was beaten by a head. His next five mounts failed, but his record for the two days was four wins and five seconds in 12 starts. RECORD CORRECTED
Although the Auckland Racing Club’s totalisator turnover of £305,316 on the opening days of its summer meeting was a Dominion record, the aggregate for the four days is considerably below the Dominion record established at Trentham in 1947 at the summer meeting when £940,577 was handled, £73,352 more than at Auckland.
