Serious Damage Caused By Opossums To Power Poles
Power failures caused by opossums are increasing very considerably, stated the engineer (Mr. H. Webb) in his report to tiie ordinary monthly meeting of the Wanganui-Rangitikei Electric Power Board yesterday. Mr. Webb added that during the past four weeks in the Wanganui area one polo top. two crossarms and one heavy main feed from Okoia subI station were damaged, the last-named fault causing damage and loss of revenue of between £3O and £4O. “At. one time opossum trouble was found only on lines adjacent to large plantations or clumps of native bush, but today these faults are likely to occur anywhere on the system; in fact, one' opossum caused a fault on the top of the steel tower at Hatrick’s wharf,” Mr. Webb reported. “The only effective guard against this trouble is the fixing of a band of sheet iron around the pole? for three feet of its length, and this has been done in a number of places where the trouhlp was common.
