Mr. Newton Hood’s Association With Softball In City
Mr. C. Newton Hood, of Wanganui, who has been selected as manager of the New Zealand representative women’s softball team to visit Australia next year, has been associated with women’s softball since its inception in Wanganui in 1940. He was primarily responsible for the formation of the first women’s team in the city, and also figured in the formation of the first national women’s softball body. He was chairman of the management committee from 1940 to 1945. For live years Mr. Hood was president of the Wanganui Women s Softball Association and when the men’s and women’s sections of the game were placed under common control in Wanganui, Mr. Hood became president of the combined association. Each year since 1940 he has managed the Wanganui representative women’s teams participating in mterprovincial tournaments and has also managed national representative fixtures. In 1946-47 he was a coach for teams playing the annual bfcirth v. South game. He has been an umpire at all women’s tournaments since 1940 and umpired Lennon trophy tournaments at Wellington in 1945-46 and at Wanganui in 1947-48. Mrs. Hood, who will be chaperone of the team visiting Australia, has assisted at every national women's tournament since they were inaugurated in 1940. She has been a chaperone of Wanganui's senior representatives for three years.
