Prohibitionist Is In Favour Of Licensing Bill

PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Last Night (PA).-—Mr. T. C. Webb (Opp., Rodney), in the second reading debate <vi the Liquor Licensing Amendment Bill in the House of Representatives tonight, .speaking as a lifelong prohibitionist, said he was bound to admit that from the evidence of polls ill recent years the people of New Zealand did not want prohibition. He thought there would be at the present time, on a straight-out vote, about GO per i. nt. in favour of continuance. He, therefore, wished to sec better conditions for the sale of liquor, and this Bill was helpful to that end. The Government and Opposition members had co-operated in introducing the Bill, which was long overdue. “I commend this Bill as evidence of the unanimous determination of this House that some at least of the long overdue reforms in the control of the liquor trade shall pass to the Statute Book this session,” said Mr. Webb.
