HURRICANE IN SOUTH AFRICA; EIGHT KILLED
CAPETOWN, Nov. 27 (Recd. 6pm). —Eight people were killed, and many injured when a hurricane hit the mining town of Roodepoort, 12 miles from Johannesburg. Walls toppled like cardboard roofs were blown off, and less substantial buildings were flattened. It is estimated that 70 homes were affected. A train approaching Roodepoort at the time of the hurricane leaned over at an angle of 45 degrees, according to passengers. Many terrified people were injured when they jumped from the train, and ambulance were busy for hours handling the casualties in the town, where the hospital overflowed with injured. All district fire brigades and a special police detachment were summoned, and thousands of volunteers hurried to the town to help in the rescue work.
