£l00 Open Shoot Won By Palmerston North Marksman
MARTON, Last Night (OC).—Some 60 marksmen coming from as far afield as Rotorua, Wellington, Masterton, Hutt and Napier as well as a strong contingent from neighbouring clubs participated in the Marton Gun. Club’s open shoot held today in glorious weather. This was the first time since 1921 that the local club had organised a shoot on such an extensive scale. The standard ot shooting was very high.
Principal event of the day was the £lOO open shoot of 25 birds and this was won by S. Mcßeth (Palmerston North) with a "possible.” Seven entrants shot 24 birds to divide the second prize. They were N. Crabb (Marton), G. Lampp (Marton), B. K. Thomson (Palmerston North). J. Thomson (P.N.), N. Batchelor (P.N.), W. A. Thomson (P.N.). and R. M. Spooner (Wanzanui). There were 54 entries. The £5O trophy 15-bird shoot resulted in a popular win for N. Crabb, president of the Marton Gun Club. Crabb won the event after a shoot-off with L. Death (Marton), L. J. Thomson (P.N.), and R. Reader (P.N.) who all shot the “possible”, to win trophies. H. Meehan (P.N.) also shot 15 birds but was not eligible for the trophy and the fifth prize went to N. Dornbush (Rangawahia) who had to shoot off with eight others. The first event on the programme, a five-bird eye opener, resulted in 21 shooting the possible as follows: N. Crabb. L. Death. C. C. McDonald, S. Tisdall. I. Brice. J. Hammopd, J. McMullan, H. Halliburton, A. Meehan, J. Thomasen, B. Tidy, T. C. Trott, R. Reader. J. Moynihan, L. J. Thomson, B. K. Thomson. J. Donald, D. Holden, G. Meehan, M. Batchelor, N. Dornbusch (54 entries). The day’s proceedings were watched by several hundred spectators. At the conclusion of the trophy shoot, the president. Mr N- Crabb, before calling upon the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. T, E. Barton) to present the trophies, extended a cordial welcome to the large crowd, which he said exceeded all expectations. The mayor. Mr. Barton, in referring to the high standard of marksmanship, considered the Marton Gun Club was fortunate In possessing such an ideal ground, which provided such a splendid background for shooting. He remarked op the number of riflemen, both young and old competing and said that it was evident that age was no bar to good marksmanship. He extended a beartv welcome to all outside shooters to Marton. Before asking Mrs. Barton to step forward to present the trophies, Mr. Barton referred to the rather serious accident which had befallen Mr. C. Rofe, a stalwart of the club, who, the previous day had injured an eye while attending to one of the traps, and he was wished a speedy and complete recovery. Tlte referees for the day were Messrs. I. Sutherland (Palmerston North and W. McKee (WangaJui).
