Wellington Lead Hutt Valley In Tennis Contests
WELLINGTON. Last Night (P.A.) —Wellington emerged from the first day’s play in their defence of the Wilding Shield and Nunneley Casket tennis trophies against Hutt Valley with a lead of four matches to two in each competition. The equal set scores and Wellington's one game lead in the shield contest and two game deficit in the casket contest, however, give a truer indication of the relative positions of the teams, and a very close finish can be expected when matches are resumed on the Newtown courts tomorrow.
The highlight of today’s p?ay was the surprise victory of. Miss N. Fleming, Wellington’s No. 2, over Mrs. J, Robb, Hutt Valley’s No. 1, in a gruelling duel over 43 games. R. Robb (Hutt Valley) impressed in the Wilding Shield series and gave (he national champion, R. McKenzie, a close run in their second set.
In the following results Wellington players are mentioned first:— v/ilding Shield: R. McKenzie beat R. Robb, 6-3, 7-5; C. Angas lost to O. Bold, 7-5, 2-6, 2-6; S. Painter beat O. Smith. 2-6, 6-1, 6-3; J. Hamilton beat F. S. Ramson, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. McKenzie and Painter beat Robb and Smith, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2; Angas and Hamilton lost to Bold and Ramson, 4-6, 6-8.
Wellington thus won 4 matches to 2, 9 sets to 7. and 74 games to 73. Nunneley Casket: Mrs. J. McVay beat Mrs. J. Graham, 6-4, 2-6, 9-7; Miss N. Fleming beat Mrs. J. Robb, 5- 12-10, 6-3; Mrs. J. Webb beat Miss P. Lengton, 2-6. 7-5, 11-9; Miss J. Webster lost to Miss E. McNeill, 3-6, 1-6. Mesdames McVay and Webb beat Misses McNeill and Longton, 6-8, 6-0, 6- Misses Fleming and Webster lost to Misses Robb and Graham, 2-6, 6-8.
