WANGANUI ROWING OPENED ON SATURDAY AT ARAMOHO

In the presence of a good attend; ance the ppening of the Wanganui Rowing season for 1948-49 was held at the Aramoho Boati:>< Club on Saturday afternoon. Introduced by Mr. H. J. Dalzell, vice-president of the club, the Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., declared the season open and emphasised the important part the river played in the lives of the people of the community. The river had been the scene of many noted rowing and sculling contests in the past, he added. He congratulated the Aramoho eight oar crew and J. Schneider, the sculler, on being chosen to represent New Zealand in rowing and sculling races in Sydney this month and next, and wished them every success. Mr. Rogers trusted that the season they were opening that day would be most successful. During the afternoon the eight oar crew and J. Schneider (sculler) were seen in exhibition rows which were impressive. A series of sprint fours provided keen competition. In the final W. James’ crow beat D. Holmes’ crew by three-quarters of a length. The announcements were broadcast by Mr. W. Baxter. Results of the sprint fours were as follows: FIRST ROUND. W. James won from J. O'Brien and N Crabb; I. Cresswell won from J. Schneider; R. Crombie won from H. Clark and R. Smith; B. Ingram won from E. Johnson; D. Holmes wot. from J. White and J. Cleary: J. Wood won from J. Thompson; Buller a bye. SECOND ROUND. James won from Cresswell, Crombie won from Ingram; Woods won from Buller; Holmes a bye. SEMI-FINAL. Holmes won from Wood; James won from Crombie. , FINAL. In the final James won from Holmes. The personnel of the crews contesting the final were:— W. James (str.), J. Williams, B. Benefield. E. Benjamin (bow); Dennis McGonagle (cox). D. Holmes (str.), L. Hill, R. Laird, E. J. Dalby (bow); Darcy McGonagle (cox).
