OPERATING I RON-TYRED VEHICLE ON ROAD WITHOUT PERMISSION The county was very keen that permission should first be obtained from the engineer as great damage was done to the road, said Mr. W. C. Shaw, traffic inspector, when prosecuting Walter Richmond Harding and Cecil James Harding in the Marton Court yesterday morning for operating a heavy iron-tyred motor venicle at Tvrakina without the consent of the roa* v?ntroLing authority. Defendants were lined £3 (costs 14s) by Mr. A. Coleman, S.M. Outlining the facts of the case, the inspector said that at Turakina on June 6 he stopped a large caterpillar bulldozer which was being , driven the road. To a question, the driver said no permission had been granted to operate the vehicle on the road. The matter was then referred to the Rangieikei County Council as the authority controlling the road, and the engineer had stated that no written permission had been given. The vehicle, which weighed five tons, had traversed some seven miles along the road, said the inspector. The driver of the vehicle. Graham Thomas Dungan, who p.eaded guilty by letter to driving the bulldozer without being the holder of a motordriver’s licence authorisig him to drive such a class of vehicle, w r as convicted and fined £1 (costs 12s). IMPRISONMENT IMPOSED FOR IDLE AND DISORDERLY CHARGE.

Pleading guilty to a charge of being idle and disorderly, Alfred William Donaldson, aged 54 years, of no fixed abode, was sent to orison for one month by Mr. A. Coleman, S.M., at a sitting of the Marton Court yesterday morning. Sergeant W. J. Brown, who conducted the case for the police, said defendant came out of Wanganui prison about a month ago and had been in Marton for a week, sleeping in a woolshed and getting his meals whenever he could. Sometimes he went without. Defendant had no money. Asked bv the magistrate whether he had anything to say, defendant said he was medically unfit for work. Mr. Coleman: Couldn’t you apply for an invalidity benefit? To this question defendant said he had not. In convicting Donaldson and sentencing him to one month’s imprisonment. the magistrate said he could not overlook defendant’s past record. PASSED CAR “FULL OF COPS” AT 60 m.p.h. Defendant did not know he was “passing a car full of cops” as he' termed it, said the assistant chief Traffic Inspector, Mr. J. H. R. Semple, Wellington, when prosecuting jack Raynard, a motor-cyclist, in the Marton Court yesterday morning, for exceeding the speed limit of 40 m.p.h. near Bulls on July 6. The magistrate, Mr. A. Coleman, imposed a fine of £3 (costs IQs). On a further charge of having no driver's licence. Raynard was convicted and lined 20s (costs 10s). | Over a distance of one mile, de- 1 fendant’s speed was checked at 601 m.p.h. said Mr. Semple in explaining i to the Court the facts of the case. Coleman, which included various types of traffic breaches, liquor near a dance hall, idle and disorderdly charge and several civil cases. LABOIU DAY GOLF PLAYED ON MARTON LINKS

Despite the wind and the rain, there was a good attendance of golfers at the Marton finks on Monday (Labour Day) for the annual competitions arranged by the Marton Club. Visitors were present from all the neighbouring clubs and shared in the prizes.

The ladies’ stableford competition was won by Mrs Max Wysocki (Marton) with a score of 28, while Mrs J. Caithness (Marton) won the stroke competition. The men’s stab.eford was won by D J. Abel (Hawkestone) with a score of 34, the runner-up being S. W. Morrison (Marton) with 30. In the afternoon a mixed Canadian foursome was played and resulted in a tie between Mrs Brown (Rangatira) and N. J. Clarke (Marton) and Q. Kingharr (Taihape) and D. J. Abel (Hawkestone), the former pair winning on the count back. At the end of the day’s play Mrs A. B. McFarlane, wife of the captain of the Marton Golf Club, presented the trophies to the winners. FAREWELL SOCIAL ANn DANCE. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Brown, who have' been residents of Marton for several years are leaving to take up residence in Wellington at the end of the month, where Mr. Brown has been appointed supervisor of faults, in the Post and Telegraph Department. Both Mr. and Mrs. Brown have been actively associated with various organisations in the town, particularly with musical organisations and stage presentations. Mr. Brown, who has been line foreman at Marton, and Mrs. Brown are being tendered a farewell social and dance in the Marton Sports Half this evening. This function has been arranged by the local P. and T. social club and all friends have been invited to attend. Opportunity will also be taken to farewell Mr. J. N. Tobin, who is under transfer to Wanganui, and Mr. L. A. Wildbore, who recently left the service. Mr. J. McConway, Wanganui, will be relieving Mr. Brown in Marton until the arrival of the permanent foreman. NO WARRANT OF FITNESS. Pleading guilty to driving a car in High Street, Marton, which did not possess a warrant of fitness, lan Keith Tichbon was convicted and fined 10s (costs 10) by Mr. A. Coleman at a sitting of the Marton Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning. The traffic inspector,. Mr. W. C. Shaw, who prosecuted, said defendant was driving an old model car which appeared to be in a state of disrepair.
