Six Britons On Survey Mission In Antarctica

LONDON, Oct. 14 (Rec. 6pm).—Six Britons, all under 30 and all single, left Southampton yesterday for Antarctica, where they will work for the Falkland Islands dependencies survey. They were chosen from 500 applicants and will stay in Antarctica for I neriods varying from 18 months to 30 months. Three are meteorologists, one a glaciologist, one a cine photographer, and a Colonial Office and • Press representative. * They sailed in the 1200-ton wooden hulled John Briscoe as reliefs for men - now working there- The ship will -1 land big supplies of food, clothing and 5 equipment at bases in the South Ork- -‘ neys and South Shetlands. The John I Briscoe, which formerly was a naval netlayev, will return next June with - the men who have completed their ) term with the survey. The secretary of the survey (Major t K. S. Pierce-Butler) said before leavs ing that the survey would take an■'other six years to complete. He will join the expedition at Montevideo.
