Scottish Cleric Suggests Apostles Creed Be Not Used
(Special N.Z.P.A. Correspondent) LONDON, Oct. 14 (Recd. 6 p.m.).— Addressing the Synod of Aberdeen, the Rev. Dr. J. T. Cox, former principal clerk to the General Assembly o{ the Church of Scotland, advocated that a repetition of the Aposties' Creed in its present form in public worship should be discontinued. Congregations, when reciting the Apostles’ Creed, says Dr. Cox, affirmed their belief in the resurrection of the body, in which not a single member believed, not even the minister himself. “It is no use saying that by the ‘body’ was meant the spiritual body," he said. “It is not so understood by the compilers, nor was it so understood by ordinary folk today. Moreover, many good Christians do not believe in descent into hell, or in the virgin birth." Repetition of these matters in the Apostles' Creed tended to repel many educated people, and should be discontinued. Dr. Cox, who is aged 83, and celebrates his ministerial diamond jubilee this week, said many sermons were too long. Preachers never thought so, but those in pews might have different ideas.
