Eight Bills Brought Down In The House Yesterday

PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Yesterday (PA).—“I have eight messages from His Excellency the Governor-Gene-ral.’’ With these words Mr. Speaker (Mr McKeen) began the proceedings of the House of Representatives today. Therre were already 12 Bills on the Order Paper before a further eight were introduced. The House thus has plenty of work ahead of it for several weeks. “Someone has been working ovirtime,” said Mr. R. G. Gerard (Opp., Ashburton) when the Speaker announced the introduction of eight new Bills. The deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mr. Holyoake) later referred to “a minor snowstorm’’ of Bills, and asked if it was the beginning of the usual end of the session “paper chase”. It was a pity some of this legislation had not been brought down earlier. The Acting Prime Minister (Mr. Nash) said he thought'the Opposition might have commended the Government for bringing the Bills down in good time. There were still two more working months before the House if necessary. The Bills introduced and read a first time were: Finance Bill, Cook Islands Amendment Bill, Carriers’ Bill, Public Holidays Amendment l>jV, Veterinary Services Amendment Bill, Nassella Tussock Amendment Bill, Patriotic and Canteen Funds Amendment Bill and Land Valuers Bill.
